About the Course

We have tailored the content of this course to help you get into housing or welfare for the first time. It is a highly practice-based programme, so prepares you for the workplace by teaching you want we know employers want you to know. We take an active interest in your progress and offer you a selection of extra student services free as part of the course to help you kick start your career. An example is our Interview Skills Workshop which concentrates on the specifics of Housing and Welfare jobs (especially useful if you have no previous experience). We also operate a highly successful Placement Scheme, to help you find that all-important first job. We work with employment agencies who find students like you highly employable because of the high level of knowledge you will have after completing this course. Many students decide to come back and take our Certificate In Council Tax and Housing Benefit Calculation And Administration, Advanced Diploma in Housing Law and Advanced Diploma in Social Care, Supported Housing and Disability Management. Whatever your level or experience, we are dedicated to maximising your chances of success in today’s highly competitive job market.

The course is taught and assessed at level 4 on the UK qualifications scale.

Aims of the Course

The aim of this course is to equip experienced housing staff as well as those new to the social housing industry, with the fundamental principles and practices in provision of social housing and welfare in the United Kingdom.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students should be able to:-

· Demonstrate understanding of contemporary issues in social housing

· Analyse the impact of the structure of the population demography on the demand for social housing

· Analyse the different laws relating to social housing

· Evaluate the homeless law and how it is applied in practice

· Demonstrate understanding of the social housing allocation law

· Appraise the theory and practice of urban regeneration

· Analyse and discuss the different tenancies and their legal implications

· Demonstrate clear understanding of the principles in tenants empowerment initiatives

· Demonstrate understanding of the structure of the social welfare system

· Demonstrate understanding of the rules in harassment and unlawful eviction

· Demonstrate clear understanding of the immigration rules as they apply to social housing and welfare

Target Audience and Students Profile

This Advanced Certificate course is suitable for you if you are already working in housing organisations, or if you intend to work as housing case officers, homelessness officers, tenancy or rent officers, welfare officers, benefit officers, officers in public or private homes or officers in other related areas. When you successfully complete this course, you will be entitled to use the letters CertHWM after your name. We are proud that we originally created this course 14 years ago, but it is still the best course you will find for depth of knowledge and up-to-date issues in housing and welfare.

This course is specifically for you if you want to develop your housing career, so we know you might not have previous housing experience. However, if you are already working in housing or welfare, this course will give you a surprising depth and range of knowledge. We focus on the management perspective when discussing issues, so you will find the content invaluable when you go for role changes or promotions. Just look at the subjects the course covers and you will see how a good knowledge of the contents will help you even in your current job. In fact, we offer variations on this course to many housing organisations and local authorities now, because we can provide more up to date training than they can!

Introduction to Social housing; Immigration Rules & Public Funds; Management principles, Qualities of the manager; Managers and their staff; Decision making and problem solving techniques; European Union citizens and housing/welfare entitlement in the UK; Population demographics and housing

Tuesday:

Housing Terminology; Civil and criminal liability; English legal system; Summary of housing law; Housing allocation law; Law of homelessness; Tenancy: Secure tenancies; Assured tenancies, Assured Shorthold tenancies; Introductory tenancies; Grounds for possession; Housing conditions;

ASSIGNMENT (Homework).

Wednesday:

(Interview Skills Workshop day 1): Voluntary Placements; Employment Agencies, CVs, Job Search and advert selection; Discrimination & Equal opportunities.

Central Government, Local Authorities and housing; Urban regeneration; The Housing Corporation and registered social landlords; Tenants participation and management.

Thursday:

(Interview Skills Workshop day 2): Person Specifications; Job Descriptions; How to successfully fill out application forms and supporting statements.

Comprehensive Area Assessment (CAA); Multi-Area Agreements; Harassment and unlawful eviction; Rent management and Debtors in distress.

MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST.

Friday:

(Interview Skills Workshop day 3): Overcoming lack of previous experience, common interview questions, creating a memorable first impression, body language, interview video, interview role play.

Motivation and job satisfaction; Social welfare and the structure of the Department of Work & Pensions; Administration and classification of welfare benefits; Introduction to social welfare benefits.

AWARD CEREMONY

Note: Support with placements, creating CVs, links with employers and employment agencies will all be covered in detail during the course.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. However, students should be able to cope with advanced studies.

Assessment

Assessment is by means of an assay-based assignment and by a multiple choice examination

Full-time (intensive course) – 1 week (Course runs Monday-Friday, 10.30 – 5.30 daily)

Further Studies
